BELSIZE ECO HOUSE London NW3
Stage: Tender Cgi: Lbmvarchitects
The Belsize Park Eco House project is a remarkable development of a detached single-family home, nestled in the heart of the Belsize Park conservation area. This project was initiated when our client approached us with the vision of transforming an underused site at the back of his property, which included an abandoned artist studio atop the land. Surrounded by the lush, mature vegetation of the back gardens of Belsize Grove, Primrose Gardens, and Belsize Park Gardens, the site offers a unique character, providing a rare sanctuary of nature within the bustling urban environment of London.
The primary objective was to preserve this natural ambiance as much as possible while creating a comfortable, modern home that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings. The design concept was inspired by the idea of a series of garden pavilions. These pavilions form a sculptural composition that can be appreciated both externally, from the surrounding gardens, and internally, through an exposed roof that showcases the varied geometries of the structure.
The resulting home features a stunning sequence of spaces that offer spectacular views of the gardens, creating a luxurious yet warm and inviting interior atmosphere. This integration of architecture and nature not only enhances the living experience but also maintains the unique, verdant character of the site, making the Belsize Park Eco House a truly exceptional addition to the area.
The planning process was quite successful, thanks to an open collaboration with the local authority of Camden. This cooperative approach ensured that the design was well-received and appreciated by all surrounding local residents. By engaging with the community and addressing their concerns, we were able to create a project that not only met regulatory requirements but also resonated with the local ethos and aesthetic.
