The Elizabeth Mews Refurbishment project, nestled in the heart of Belsize Park, London, began with a building steeped in history. Originally a mews, likely serving as a stable for one of the area's grand houses, it later transitioned into various roles, including a music venue in the 1960s and a garage for servicing cars.
When the client approached us, the property's interior had been severely altered, with little remaining of its original features except for a stunning timber roof truss hidden behind double ceilings. The initial layout featured bedrooms on the first floor and living areas on the ground floor, prompting us to propose an inversion of the layout. By relocating the bedrooms to the ground floor, we unveiled the full beauty of the roof structure, creating a spacious, open-plan living and kitchen area on the first floor.
The result is a comfortable, efficient home with a charming side patio, perfect for modern living. We opted for a simple palette of materials, including microcement and natural timber for the joinery and kitchen, enhancing the space's warmth and character. Upgraded insulation ensures the house meets current standards of comfort and efficiency, making it not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical for everyday living.
