MONTPELIER SQUARE London SW7
Stage: Under Construction Cgi: Lbmvarchitects
The Montpelier Square Refurbishment project involved the restoration of a Grade II listed house nestled in the heart of the prestigious Knightsbridge area in London. When appointed, the property was in a state of disrepair, with only a few original features remaining.
Years of neglect and numerous refurbishments had eroded the home's original charm and layout on every floor. Our approach began with meticulous historical research, leading to a conservative restoration aimed at recapturing the home's original grandeur. This involved meticulously rebuilding historical architectural features and moldings while preserving the original sequence of spaces on each floor.
Following negotiations with Westminster Council, planning permission was obtained to excavate an additional floor below ground level. This new floor was dedicated to a wellness area featuring a gym, sauna, steam room, and massage area, as well as a utility room and an additional bedroom designed to maximize natural light through a meticulously crafted lightwell.
A striking double-height glass extension was approved for both the lower ground and ground levels, creating a captivating contrast between the historic building and the minimalist glass structure. This extension, housing the dining room, accentuates the building's dramatic height.
The interior palette was carefully curated, featuring a selection of materials and colors chosen to evoke elegance and comfort. Precious marbles were strategically placed to complement the building's inherent grandeur, adding to the overall sense of opulence and refinement.
As part of the approval process, an additional floor was permitted to be added atop the building, facilitating the creation of two extra rooms. Additionally, a glazed lift was incorporated to serve all seven floors of the building, ensuring accessibility and convenience for residents.
This expansion not only increased the living space within the home but also enhanced its functionality and accessibility. The glazed lift not only provides practicality but also adds a modern touch to the historic structure, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary design.
The careful balance between preserving historical integrity and introducing modern amenities has resulted in a truly remarkable transformation. The Montpelier Square residence now stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of heritage and innovation, offering its occupants a luxurious and sophisticated living experience in the heart of Knightsbridge.
